A Lifetime of Experience

I have been involved in childcare since the age of nine when I started watching two boys that were six and five. As a teenager I cared for multiple families and at 17 I was licensed to watch two girls while their single mom went to school and worked midnight shift.  I attended Oakland University’s Early Childhood Education Program until I got married and raised my own babies.  When my youngest was 6 months old, I opened a daycare in my home.  With my children in school full time, I worked as a nail tech and at an art gallery as well as I helped in my children's classrooms.  As my children grew older I was a Cub Scout den mother for 4 years and a Girl Scout leader for 10 years and during that time 5 of those years were spent as activities director, cook and asst. director of the Mackinac Island Honor Scouts.  When my youngest went off to college, I started mentoring pregnant teens through a program at Catholic Social Services and helped during their labor and delivery.

I think that my children are my greatest references and you are welcome to contact them and “interview” them if you wish, as well as the other references that I can provide.  Before opening The Childminder in my home, I worked as a live out nanny for a wonderful family with two children for six years.

My husband is my assistant and is here with us every day to help care for your children.  He is affectionately known as the recess lady and the children love to be with him and they call him Papa Jerry.

I love to cook and to be outside and to garden.  Reading is a passion and I feel that books are a very important part of the development of a child’s brain as well as a way to keep mine active.  I am also an artist and arts and crafts are very important to me.  My greatest enjoyment comes from caring for children, mine and anyone elses. Most children call me “Aunt Cheri” and I would love for your child(ren) to do so also.

I am a licensed day care provider with a lifetime of experience in positive child rearing and care. To obtain my license I had to pass multiple inspections performed by the State Of Michigan.  Before opening The Childminder, I was required to submit to a background check by the State Police and the Department of Human Services.  I must also pass surprise inspections in the future to maintain my license.  I am also certified in First Aid and CPR.  I have completed multiple family childcare training courses and each year I continue to attend many seminars and trainings on child development.
